A Nutella cafe’ in Chicago

Crepes, gelato, oatmeal, yoghurt parfaits, croissants, waffles, pancakes, and a fruit fondue plate will be on the menu

In a couple of days, all Nutella-lovers (or Nutella-addicted) in Chicago will have a new favourite gathering to explore: the Nutella café that Ferrero is opening inside Chicago’s Millennium Park Plaza on the city’s East Side.

What we know so far is that Ferrero, the Italian brand that invented and manufactures the delicious chocolate-hazelnut spread, will offer in this brand new café a menu of food items base on Nutella. Among them, crepes, gelato, oatmeal, yoghurt parfaits, croissants, waffles, pancakes, and a fruit fondue plate.

Differently, from what is already happening at the Nutella Bar inside New York’s Eataly or the Nutella counter inside Chicago’s Eataly, whose menus are all about sweets, this new Nutella Café will also cater savory lunch items that do not contain Nutella, like panini and salads, to make sure guests can stop there to have a proper lunch and end it with a Nutella touch.

As far as drinks are concerned, the menu includes all of the usual drinks but not a Nutella latte, as guests may have expected. However, customers will be able to order a hot chocolate or mocha and add whipped cream and “Nutella drizzle.”

The design of the shop is also very interesting, as it is meant “to make you feel like you’re actually walking into a jar of Nutella,” according to director of operations at Brand Innovation Group Angela Baird, who, according to the Chicago Tribune consulted on the project.

As reminded by the American magazine Eater, “Nutella, a spread made from sugar, modified palm oil, hazelnuts, cocoa, skimmed milk powder, whey powder, lecithin, and vanillin, was invented by a baker named Pietro Ferrero in 1946 after World War II. With chocolate in short supply, Ferrero decided to extend cocoa with sugar and the addition of hazelnuts, which were plentiful in his hometown of Alba, Piedmont. He called it pasta gianduja and sold it as a solid block. Later, he created a spread and called it Supercrema. In 1964, after Ferrero’s son Michele took over the family business, the company renamed the spread Nutella”. Today, according to various reports, over 385,808 tonnes of Nutella were produced worldwide in 2013.
